Let’s get your canvas moving.

Getting started

Tap Allow all photos, then choose Allow Full Access in the system prompt. Wait for a few photos to be indexed. In Draw mode, make a line with your finger. Retroline matches its contour to photos from your library.

Exploring

Switch to Drag and move your finger across the screen, or hold the joystick at the bottom right in the direction you want to explore. Switch back to Draw to try another shape. Touch and hold the mode control for Rescan photos, Privacy policy, and Support.

Missing photos or lines

Retroline works with photos available locally on your device. Open iCloud-only photos in Photos and wait for them to download, then return to Retroline. Photos with clear outlines and contrast produce more useful contours. Newly added or changed photos are picked up while Retroline is active; return to the app after adding photos.

The indexing bar shows progress. It hides while you draw and returns after three seconds of inactivity until indexing finishes.

Permissions and empty libraries

If access is denied or limited, open Settings, find Retroline, and set Photos to Full Access. If your library is empty, add a few photos first. Retroline requires iOS or iPadOS 17 or later.

Place and time labels

Dates come from the photo’s capture metadata. Place names require saved photo coordinates and an internet connection for Apple’s geocoding service. Missing dates or locations appear as empty labels. Retroline does not request your live location.

Purchases

Retroline is a one-time App Store purchase, with no subscription or in-app purchases. Apple handles billing and refunds; see Apple’s refund instructions.
